WHAT
YOU SHOULD KNOW
- Understanding the web,
- Analyzing your needs & planning
- Are you ready.
Staking out your place on the World Wide
Web. The web is a great place. It is hot, really. But, what is it? What can it do
for you?
UNDERSTANDING THE
WEB
As the web first began to capture
attention as something really different from any other ways for people and organizations
to communicate with each other, business people began to see here some opportunity in this
remarkable medium. Some, at first, thought of the web as a great and chief way to
advertise. Wrong. Well, it could be that the web is a place that has the potential to
bring millions of visitors to your part of it, and it is a good medium for conveying
information about products and services, but it takes a lot more than the old,
altogether-too-familiar litany of features, benefits and advantages to attract those
millions. And that is the means, no matter what your business or purpose, to success on
the web: attracting people, lots of them.
In conventional wisdom, there are three essential
aspects of a successful business: location, location, and location. It would seem that
since the Internet is virtually everywhere, then finding the right location is not a
problem. This notion couldnt be any further from the truth. If you stretch your
notion of what location is a bit to include the cultural landscape, you can start the get
the idea of what separates the high-volume sites that get millions of visitors a day from
the sleepy backwaters of cyberspace. People are curious, and they have wants and needs.
Good web sites satisfy these needs. They provide content that gives people a reason to go
there.
If it sounds like the web is
for you, and youre ready plant your companys flag on the web, youve got
some thinking to do. For starters, you need to find out what the web is. Actually, you
cant really do that because the web is a lot of different things to many people, but
what we mean is to get some knowledge of the organization (its not really total anarchy)
and technology that makes the web a reality. Some possible areas for consideration would
be:
What is a domain? What is a web site?
What are the technologies that enable you to conduct
business on the Internet, and how do you implement them? What is e-commerce, and how is it
carried out? What are the security concerns?
What are the demographics of the web?

ANALYZE YOUR NEEDS AND PLAN
Assuming youve done your
homework, and you have concluded that in order to stay competitive, and make your business
grow, youve got to establish your web site. Now what do you do?
Start with your business process. Consider how you
interact with customers and what takes place in exchange of goods or services. What, of
all that is possible in a web presence, can help your business to grow? Improved service?
faster and more convenient order processing? Value-added service? Increased sales volume?
Increased market size?
A web site may not be only for interaction with
customers, it could also be a beneficial internal resource for improving business
processes. Here are several possible benefits of both internal and external web sites:
External web presence
Increase size and scope of
market
Provide value-added service to customers
Reduce cost of operations
Provide enhanced, and more direct marketing
Make it easier for customers to do business with you
Internal Web Presence
Improve efficiency and
productivity
Add or improve on collaborative capability
Quickly disseminate and publish information; quickly
get information to people who need it to do their jobs
Improve competitive position: do things better, more
quickly, and more efficiently
Once you have some focus on what
particular areas of your business could be improved by a web presence, you need to decide
on the technology to use to implement this site. There are many decisions here that relate
to the types of programs that will be implemented in your web site, who will develop and
maintain these applications, and what service provider to use to host your web site. You
will also face decisions about how much of this undertaking you will do in house, and how
much to outsource to service providers.
